1945- Born in Ponta Grossa, Paraná, November 25th.

1968- Participates as an actor and assistant producer in Lance Maior, first feature-length film directed by Silvio Back. Works as the coordinator of the cinema division of the Department of Education and Culture of the State of Paraná and organizes a festival of animated films and a retrospective of Fritz Lang's films.

1969- Moves to São Paulo. Is accepted to the University of São Paulo's School of Arts and Communications (ECA). Works as assistant director in Antunes Filho's Compasso de Espera and Maurício Rittner's Uma Mulher para Sábado.

1970- Works as assistant director in O Jogo da Vida e da Morte, directed by Mario Kuperman, and in Regina Jehá's short film, Bexiga Ano Zero.

1971- His work as a photographer is displayed in an individual exhibit at the SESC Gallery. Works as assistant director in Grupo Oficina's production of Nelson Rodrigues's O Rei da Vela. Is also assistant director in O Vendedor de Ilusões, a film by Maurice Capovilla.

1972- Debuts as a director with the short film Omnibus, based on a short story from Julio Cortázar's Bestiário. The film is one of the highlights of the short film category in 1975's Cannes International Film Festival.

1973- Starts a three-year period in which he directs documentaries and advertising films in Curitiba and São Paulo. Works as a photographer and actor in the Grupo Pão e Circo's production of O Casamento do Pequeno Burguês.

1977- Directs A Segunda Besta, short film based on Carta a uma Senhorita em Paris, another short story from Julio Cortázar's Bestiário.

1979- Directs Maldita Coincidência, his first feature-length film, praised by prominent film critics as the revelation of one of the least conventional and most creative talents of Brazil.

1982- Directs Mato Eles?, medium-length documentary about the conflicts present in a native reservation in Paraná.

1983- Directs the short film Divina Previdência, which criticizes the country's bureaucracy portraying the tribulations faced by a wounded homeless man who has to deal with documents, Social Security forms and state workers. The movie won the prize of Best Director in the 12th Gramado Brazilian Film Festival.

1984- Directs Entojo, short film that discusses the process of ecological preservation in the north of Paraná.

1988- Directs Romance, feature-length film that deals with ethical, political and social questions raised by the death of a leftist intellectual. The movie wins the prizes of Best Director, Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress in the 21th Brasília Film Festival, is included in the MoMA's New Directors/New Films Festival (1989), in the Rotterdam Film Festival (1989) and in the 39th Berlin International Film Festival (1989).

1989- Directs a production of Mozart's Don Giovanni in Curitiba's Teatro Guaíra.

1994- Directs the feature-length film A Causa Secreta, based on a short story by Machado de Assis, about a drama company that faces situations of extreme poverty while researching for a new play. The movie wins the prizes of Best Director and Best Actress in the 27th Brasília Film Festival (1994) and Best Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress by the Art Critics Association of São Paulo (1994).

2000- Concludes Cronicamente Inviável, feature-length film shot in São Paulo, Santa Catarina, Rio de Janeiro, Bahia, Mato Grosso and Rondônia, which received the 3rd HBO-Brazil Movie Award, awarded as financial aid toward the post-production of feature-length films.
